José Valente has been teaching several Masterclasses internationally in the past years. He has also given conferences and has written articles and opinions in both academic publications as newspapers and magazines.

In his seminars he shares his musical vision, within a practical and theoretical standpoint. He has taught both teachers as well as students in Portugal, USA, Cyprus, Spain and Austria:

José Valente was published both in academic journals as well as magazines and cultural websites, such as: Routledge; MACA Magazine; Via Latina; Comunidade Cultura e Arte; Revista Gerador; and many more.

His pedagogic approach and insight, focus on both concrete as well as subjective aspects in music. However these elements can easily be adapted towards other kinds of cooperative experiences, also non artistic or musical related.

  • IMPROVISATION: a great tool to develop your self awareness and personal expression. Learning the fundamentals about improvisation and composition.

  • CREATIVITY in the classroom: how to use creativity of both students and teachers to achieve musical proficiency and quality; how to adjust one's capacity towards creation; how to help the student through composition to get motivated and improve.

  • DEEP LISTENING: using Pauline Olivero's knowledge, learn how to achieve a higher level of listening focus. Free improvisation.

  • GROUP COMPOSING: create situations that facilitate the composition of pieces in groups, independent of the level of the musician. Sound painting and John Zorn's Cobra like improvisation games.

  • ETHICS IN ART: Respect the quality. Try to make the best art you can and ignore the established power, the bullies or anyone who tries to take you down!

  • ARTISTIC PRINCIPLES: What is music? How to accomplish a great work of art?

  • CARREER MANAGEMENT: How to achieve opportunities to present your talent and be financially aware and responsible, without losing sight of your artistic vision and quality.

  • HISTORY OF MUSIC: finding out various examples of other musics in the entire world.
